Notifications

Configure how and when you receive notifications about workspace activity.

Notification Channels

Contextium sends notifications through multiple channels:

• In-App - Notifications within Contextium interface
• Email - Sent to your registered email address
• Slack - In Slack channels (Professional plan+)
• Webhooks - Custom webhooks via API (Professional plan+)

Accessing Notification Settings

Navigate to Settings → Notifications to configure your preferences.

Notification Types

File Activity

Get notified about file changes:

Files you created:

• Someone edits your file
• Someone comments on your file
• Someone deletes your file
• Someone moves your file

Files you watch:

• Any changes to watched files
• New comments added

All workspace files:

• New files created
• Files deleted
• Major updates

Comments

Stay informed about discussions:

• Replies to your comments - Someone replies to you
• Mentions (coming soon) - Someone @mentions you
• Comments on your files - New comments on files you created

Team Activity

Monitor team changes:

• New members - Someone joins workspace
• Member removed - Someone leaves or is removed
• Role changes - Member roles are updated
• Invitations sent - Someone is invited

Workspace Updates

Stay informed about workspace changes:

• Billing changes - Subscription updates
• Workspace settings - Settings modified
• Plan limits - Approaching or exceeding limits
• Integrations - Integration status changes

Security

Important security alerts:

• New login - Login from new device or location
• Password changed - Your password is updated
• 2FA changes - Two-factor auth enabled/disabled
• API key created - New API key generated

Configuring Notifications

Enable/Disable Notifications

1. Navigate to Settings → Notifications
2. Find notification category
3. Toggle on/off for each channel:
   • In-App
   • Email
   • Slack (if connected)
4. Changes save automatically

Notification Frequency

Choose how often to receive notifications:

Real-time:

• Immediate notifications as they happen
• Best for active collaboration

Digest:

• Daily summary at 9 AM (your timezone)
• Weekly summary on Monday morning
• Best for less urgent updates

Configure per notification type:

1. Navigate to Settings → Notifications
2. Find notification type
3. Select frequency:
   • Real-time
   • Daily digest
   • Weekly digest
   • Never
4. Click Save

In-App Notifications

Notification Center

Access notifications within Contextium:

1. Click Notifications icon (🔔) in header
2. View all recent notifications
3. Click notification to view details
4. Mark as read individually or all at once

Notification Badge

Red badge shows unread notification count.

Notification Actions

From notification center:

• Mark as Read - Dismiss notification
• Mark All as Read - Clear all notifications
• Delete - Remove notification

Email Notifications

Email Preferences

1. Navigate to Settings → Notifications
2. Scroll to Email Preferences
3. Configure:
   • Notification emails
   • Marketing emails
   • Product updates
   • Changelog
4. Click Save

Email Format

Emails include:

• Clear subject line
• Summary of activity
• Direct link to related content
• One-click unsubscribe

Unsubscribe

Unsubscribe from specific notification types:

• Click Unsubscribe link in any email
• Choose which notifications to disable
• Click Save Preferences

Or disable all email notifications:

1. Navigate to Settings → Notifications
2. Toggle off all Email options
3. Changes save automatically

Slack Notifications

Available on Professional plan and above.

Set Up Slack Notifications

1. Navigate to Settings → Integrations
2. Click Connect Slack
3. Authorize Contextium
4. Navigate to Settings → Notifications
5. Enable Slack for desired notification types
6. Select Slack channel for each type
7. Click Save

Slack Notification Format

Slack messages include:

• Rich formatting
• Links to content
• Action buttons (approve, view, reply)
• File previews

Slack Channels

Send different notifications to different channels:

• #docs-updates - File changes
• #docs-comments - Comments and discussions
• #team - Team changes

Webhook Notifications

Available on Professional plan and above.

Configure Webhooks

1. Navigate to Settings → Webhooks
2. Click Create Webhook
3. Enter webhook URL
4. Select events to trigger webhook
5. Configure payload format (JSON)
6. Click Create

Webhook Events

Trigger webhooks on:

• File created, updated, deleted
• Comment added
• Member added, removed
• Version created

Do Not Disturb

Pause notifications temporarily:

1. Navigate to Settings → Notifications
2. Enable Do Not Disturb
3. Select duration:
   • 1 hour
   • 4 hours
   • Until tomorrow
   • Custom time
4. Click Enable

During Do Not Disturb:

• No in-app notifications
• No email notifications
• No Slack messages
• Urgent security alerts still sent

Notification Best Practices

For Active Contributors

Enable real-time notifications for:

• Comments on your files
• Replies to your comments

Use digest for:

• General workspace activity
• Team changes
• New files created

For Reviewers

Enable real-time notifications for:

• Comments requiring response

Use digest for:

• General file updates
• Team activity

For Managers/Admins

Enable real-time notifications for:

• Team changes
• Security alerts
• Billing updates

Use digest for:

• File activity

Reducing Notification Fatigue

If overwhelmed by notifications:

1. Switch most notifications to daily digest
2. Keep only critical items real-time
3. Disable notifications for low-priority events
4. Use Do Not Disturb during focus time
5. Check notification center once or twice daily

Watching Files

Get notifications for specific files:

1. Open a file
2. Click Watch (👁️) button
3. Choose notification level:
   • All activity
   • Comments only
   • Major changes only
4. Click Save

Unwatch by clicking Unwatch button.

Troubleshooting

Not Receiving Notifications

If you're not getting expected notifications:

1. Check notification settings - Ensure enabled
2. Check spam folder - Email might be filtered
3. Verify email address - Ensure email is verified
4. Check Do Not Disturb - Make sure it's not enabled
5. Review frequency settings - May be set to digest

Too Many Notifications

If getting overwhelmed:

1. Switch to digest mode for most notifications
2. Unwatch files you're no longer interested in
3. Disable low-priority notification types
4. Use Slack for urgent items only

Notifications Not Linking

If notification links don't work:

1. Ensure you're logged in
2. Check you have access to the content
3. Try copying URL and opening in new tab
4. Contact support if issue persists
